Apprenticeship: The Da Vinci Formula

LEONARDO da Vinci started his career in 1467 at age 15 as an apprentice to the renowned painter Andrea del Verrocchio in Florence, Italy. At first, he would perform simple chores, almost as a servant would — despite his IQ of 180 to 220. At age 20, da Vinci was offered membership in the painters’ guild of Florence, but he humbly remained with Verrocchio until he became an independent master in 1478.

Apprenticeship then and now

According to Wikipedia, “the system of apprenticeship first developed in the later Middle Ages and came to be supervised by craft guilds and town governments. A master craftsman was entitled to employ young people as an inexpensive form of labor in exchange for providing food, lodging and formal training in the craft.”
